Purpose of a Spirometer

A spirometer helps to measure how well your lungs are functioning by recording the amount of air you breathe in and out and the speed of your breath. The three main values you will see are: PEF which is the maximum amount you can exhale, FEV1 which is the amount of air you can force out of your lungs in one second, and FVC which is the greatest total amount of air you can forcefully breathe out after breathing in as deeply as possible.

Getting Ready to Connect Your Spirometer
  1. The following steps should be completed after you have downloaded the app on your phone and once you have taken your new device out of the box.
  2. Make sure you have your phone and spirometer (with batteries inside) near you.

Tips for Taking a Reading
  • Do not put your tongue in the mouthpiece when taking your reading.
  • Do not obstruct the turbined with your hand. Hold the device as if it were a cell phone.
  • Do not bend your neck.
  • Complete this test standing up straight or sitting upright.
  • Once done, slowly remove the device from your mouth and avoid sudden movements as this can push air into the turbine which could affect the test results.
